Address Directories for Linz, Salzburg and Innsbruck online

The address directories Linz 1936, Linz 1940, Salzburg 1942, Innsbruck 1938 and Innsbruck 1940 are online.

The collection of digital historical address directories in the Findbuch is expanding. Following on from the late-March publication in digital form of the subscriber directories of the telephone networks in Salzburg, editions of May 1937 and May 1938, and the address directory for Baden of 1933/34, since mid-April a number of further historical address directories from Upper Austria, Salzburg and Tyrol have been available. These address and telephone directories were all edited in OCR and can be searched electronically, even those in Gothic type.

The Official Linz Address Directory 1936 comprises around 500 pages and contains directories of authorities, businesses and residential addresses, a directory of all automobile and motorcycle owners and of real estate owners and streets.

The Official Linz Address Directory 1940 comprises around 1140 pages and includes directories of authorities, businesses and residential addresses, a directory of real estate owners and streets, a directory of residents listed both alphabetically and by street, and a map of the former “Reich Regional Capital” of Linz.

The Address Directory for the City of Salzburg for the year 1942 spans approx. 430 pages and in addition to the directory of residents also includes a directory of streets, roads and public squares, the postal addresses for authorities, official offices and public institutions, a directory of service providers and businesses and an index of buildings in the City of Salzburg.

The Address Directory for the City of Innsbruck and the neighboring Municipalities of Hötting, Mühlau and Amras for the year 1938 spans approx. 330 pages and in addition to a directory of residents also includes a directory of the honorary citizens of the City of Innsbruck, the authorities and official offices, the owners of residential buildings, Chamber members, traders and businesspeople.

The Address Directory of the Reich Regional Capital of Innsbruck for the year 1940 comprises around 360 pages and in addition to a directory of residents also contains articles on “The 700th Anniversary of the City of Innsbruck” and “The Organizational Structure of the Party and the State in the Reich Region of Tyrol-Vorarlberg”, an index of authorities and official offices and of the Nazi Party and its organizations, a directory of the owners of residential buildings, Chamber members, residents of the Spa Resort of Bad Igls, and traders and businesspeople.

These historical address directories were digitized with the kind permission of the Austrian National Library, a partner in the project, and are provided by the Findbuch for research purposes.
